GREEN & SUSTAINABLE
DIGITALIZATION FOR AN
ECO-FRIENDLY ECONOMY

Using digital solutions like the Internet of Things (IoT) to reduce CO2 emissions benefits the environment, companies, and consumers. We help you make the most of green energy, take control of natural risks, and manage your IoT devices. Our goal is simple: driving growth with sustainable digitalization.

The climate crisis is omnipresent and undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges humanity has ever faced. But let’s look ahead to 2050: CO2 emissions have been reduced to a minimum, electricity is being generated by wind and solar power (e.g. for smart street lights), people are getting around with eco-friendly electric bicycles and charging their devices at smart benches, and both industry and cities are protecting their assets and infrastructure with IoT technology. Sounds utopian? Well, politics and many companies already have this future in sight, and doing business in a sustainable way is becoming a societal responsibility.

What’s more, the EU’s Green Deal is set to pave the way for a competitive and resource-efficient economy. It aims to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 55% from 1990 to 2030 and achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Our sustainable digitalization solutions offer new opportunities for greener companies to keep up with changing customer demands and operate ecologically at the same time.

OUR SUSTAINABLE DIGITALIZATION
SERVICES & SOLUTIONS FOR A GREEN FUTURE

Digital sustainability solutions like the IoT can help many different sectors reduce CO2 emissions and ease some of the pressure on the climate. Here’s a quick look at our portfolio.

GREEN-POWERED, SMART STREETLIGHTS

Smart streetlights make places greener. Our solution features solar cells mounted on a luminous ring at the end of the pole with a small wind turbine hidden inside the ring. Electricity generated by wind is then used to illuminate the street, and there’s even energy left over to charge an electric scooter or e-bike. The unit is connected to the grid but always uses any available renewable energy first. Only when the batteries are completely empty does it start consuming energy from the grid. This allows the system to save > 90% compared with regular lighting and even > 60% with standard LEDs. What’s more, we also offer smart benches designed for public spaces. They’re a great piece of smart urban furniture and can even interact with the smart streetlight. Plus, they boast a great range of optional features.

  • Make your area greener with lights powered by wind and solar energy
  • Use integrated energy storage and grid connection for multiple IoT purposes
  • Save > 90% compared with regular lighting and > 60% with standard LEDs
  • Combine with a smart bench for USB/wireless charging points and e-bike docking

DIGITALIZE AND CONTROL WATER RISKS WITH THE IOT

Water damage caused by natural disasters can end up costing billions. We offer a joint solution with our partner to protect critical infrastructure and assets while also increasing safety for people. What’s more, we help improve your resilience and ability to withstand water disasters. Our sustainable digitalization solution collects data on the world’s water for valuable insights that can provide early warning signs and help minimize risks caused by water. Sensors transmit the data over our worldwide Deutsche Telekom network (LTE-M, Long Term Evolution for Machines) to the cloud. LTE-M is specially designed to provide connectivity for applications on the Internet of Things (IoT). It’s also 5G-ready, boasts very low latency, low power consumption, and high indoor availability for eco-friendly use.

  • Collect data with sensors around the clock to record water levels, tides, snow, ice, and rain
  • Transmit data via our SIM cards and worldwide network (LTE-M) to the cloud
  • Receive local, individual water data about consumption (Data as a Service, DaaS)
  • Protect warehouse roofs and monitor water levels along coastal regions
  • Use existing worldwide sensors with an annual subscription (no investment needed)

IOT AND BIG DATA MANAGEMENT PLATFORMS

Implementing IoT projects is like a labyrinth of different devices, protocols, networks, clouds, and applications. But we bring order by providing IoT platform solutions (e.g. IoT Hub, Thingsboard) that connect heterogeneous systems so you can keep an eye on important IoT sensors, clouds, and dashboards. You can also use our Data Intelligence Hub (DIH) to mine the new gold: data. This ecosystem for big data exchange and analytics acts as an interface for big data management – something that was missing in the market up to now.

  • Bring all IoT data, devices, and applications together in one system
  • Common transport encryption methods for TCP and UDP
  • DIH with a wide range of analytics services and AI-supported data analytics tools
  • Highest data security standards thanks to a decentral multi-certified architecture

 What is digital
sustainability
to us?

As a leading IT and telecommunications provider, we’re here to equip you with the best the digital world has to offer. But we’re enabling more than just a digital future – also one that’s more sustainable and allows everyone to live happier, healthier, better lives.

Green and sustainable digitalization solutions open up new avenues to reduce CO2 emissions and conduct business in a more eco-friendly way – from green logistics and production to packaging, sales, marketing, and more. For example, Telekom has launched its #GreenMagenta label to identify Telekom products, services, and initiatives that are particularly sustainable. If recycled material is used, the packaging is biodegradable, or the product is particularly energy-efficient, it gets this label. Our smartphone scheme for old devices is a great example. Telekom takes back customers’ old phones and either recycles them or the raw materials they contain. We use the green label to highlight products and services with added ecological and societal value to customers and business partners. By doing business more sustainably, we also fulfill our responsibility to society and contribute to achieving climate targets.

Green Logistics

Green Logistics

In supply chains, goods can perish because their condition is unknown during transit. But companies can use an IoT platform and the cloud to monitor them along the way. And less waste means fewer replacement deliveries, less traffic, lower CO2 emissions, and more efficient use of resources.

Predictive Maintenance

Predictive Maintenance

Cloud-based IoT solutions use connected sensors to continuously collect and evaluate operating data from machines. Predictive maintenance helps detect faults before they impact a machine’s performance or cause an outage. This helps improve the service life of machines and reduces vehicle and fuel costs related to customer service.

Save Natural Resources

Save Natural Resources

Natural resources are valuable and scarce, so we have to use them efficiently. Smart metering with IoT devices is the perfect solution and can also help optimize consumption. It allows devices to be controlled remotely, reduces water consumption, saves resources, and cuts costs.

Reduce Air Pollution

Reduce Air Pollution

Our Data Intelligence Hub can collect data from official readings and other sensors to create a comprehensive picture of a region’s air quality. You can even take things a step further by enriching it with information about the weather, local construction sites, current traffic levels, and tree density for improved forecasting.

Make Cities Smarter

Make Cities Smarter

Our Data Intelligence Hub allows cities to provide data to their citizens using a self-service model. Communities, companies, and start-ups can then use available data to create new values and business models, helping the city prosper.
